Icon Effects and App Launcher
April 22nd, 2007 by Manic
I’ve been setting up my nootebook with a fresh install of Windows XP. After getting the essential utilities, I started to look around for some interesting add-ons. Lifehacker pointed me towards an app launcher called sTabLauncher. I tried it out, and its cool, but I saw someone in the comments point to a similar utility called Rocket Dock.
Rocket Dock is basically the Dock Bar from Mac OS 10. So it wants to serve as the all-in-one utility to:
- Quick access to launch apps
- Tray for minimizing running app windows
- Indicate which programs are currently running
I always disliked the Windows quick launch on the taskbar, so this really helps there. On the flip side, I also really disliked how the Dock is OS 10 treats minimized Windows. The taskbar does a much better job of that. And indicating what is running? I think this sort of thing is only a problem for people who leave all of there app windows open and on screen.
So this utility gives me the best of both worlds, I use it as an app launcher but turn off the other stuff that Windows is better as doing.
While on the groups main page, they showed off another utility called UberIcon. This adds some interesting effects to icons when they are launched, and it integrates with Rocket Dock so they will share the same effects configuration.
Pretty cool stuff.
